About this experience

Ever wondered why one pattern calls for worsted weight while another uses sock yarn? Or why cotton and wool can behave so differently beyond just the way they feel? In this class, we’ll take the mystery out of yarn choice so you can stitch with confidence.

We’ll start by exploring yarn weights—what they mean, how they affect your finished fabric, and when (and how) you can substitute a different weight than the pattern suggests. You’ll see how the same project transforms when worked in different yarns and learn tips for converting patterns to fit your preferred weight.

Next, we’ll dive into fibers—wool, alpaca, cotton, linen, blends, and beyond—discussing their advantages, similarities, and best uses. If allergies or preferences guide your choices, we’ll help you discover smart alternatives and how to find patterns that suit your favorite fibers.

Bring along a pattern you’d like to substitute yarn for—or that skein sitting in your stash waiting for its perfect project—and we’ll spend the last part of class matchmaking to find your best options.

Supplies Included in Cost:

  • Yarn Substitution Worksheet
  • Pattern (Crochet or Knit)

Supplies Needed:

  • Pen/Pencil
  • Notebook
  • Any pattern and/or yarn you would like to discuss further.

Heather learned to crochet and sew as a young child. Her sewing stuck with her for years and then she picked up some knitting needles over 15 years ago never looking back. She eventually went back to her roots and started to crochet again. And as she has been falling down the fiber arts rabbit hole, she also enjoys spinning and weaving. Heather has coached youth sports since she was a youth and enjoys passing along her knowledge to help others take their interests to the next step. If you enjoy learning and laughing, you will definitely enjoy spending time at the table with Heather picking up a new skill.
