This class is one session long. Please ensure you are available for the session before booking your spot. See cancellation policy below.

Picking colors for a striped, colorwork, or gradient project is one of the most exciting — and most paralyzing — parts of multicolor knitting. Why do some combinations sing and others disappear? What makes a great contrast color? How do you build a palette that works in yarn, not just on your phone screen?

In this workshop, we'll cover the fundamentals of color theory as they apply specifically to fiber projects: hue, value, and saturation; contrast and readability in colorwork; how to use a value scale to test combinations; and strategies for building palettes from a statement skein. You'll get hands-on time with yarn from YarnCom's shelves to practice building combinations, and leave with a color selection framework you can apply to any multicolor project.

Topics covered:

  • Color basics: hue, value, saturation
  • Contrast
  • The value scale test
  • Warm vs. cool, saturated vs. muted - how fiber renders differently than on the screen
  • Building a palette from a statement skein or color you love
  • Stripe sequencing and color order
  • Common pitfalls

Materials for class:

  • Notebook and pen
  • Smartphone or tablet
  • Optional: bring any yarn you've been struggling to pair

Homework

  • Find one image - a painting, photo, or pattern - that uses colors you love; bring it printed or on your phone
  • Bring a skein and/or project idea you'd like to build a palette for

Minimum Number of Students: 3

Hi, I'm so excited to teach you about the magic of knitting and crochet! I have been knitting for 7 years and crocheting for 4, all self-taught from youtube videos. Knitting has always been a way for me to relax and take time away from screens. I love making wearables - sweaters, tees, and socks, oh my! But I've also made stuffed animals, blankets and plenty of gifts for friends and family. I'm always learning new techniques and cannot wait for you to join me!
